Black and white Siberian Husky male from the North Central Animal
Care Shelter, Los Angeles, impound number A0983254.
This young boy has an oblique femur head break at an angle to the left leg requiring a plate. Dr Lee of North Central Animal Shelter so kindly took his x-rays to Dr. Klause of Arcadia Small Animal Hospital for consultation. The quotation is $1800, and 2 to 3 followup visits at approximately $300 each. Dr. Klause also stated he should recover fine with little or no lasting effects.
Since he has been in the shelter a week TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. Dr. Klause says this surgery needs to be performed by Wednesday.
Update: October 1st
He has been delivered to Dr. Klause, and will have his surgery on Thursday, October 2nd. He does walk, but he holds the leg up and will not apply pressure to the foot. Its the leg closest to us in the pictures.
Current donations are at $1445, and will be updated when the tallies are updated.
We are continuing to ask for donations toward the cost of his surgery and care. SHRR/CA will bear the cost of getting this Husky back into shape, but appreciate additional donations to help with the expenses.

Update: October 2nd.
The following is an update from the kind sole that will be watching this boy while he recovers.
Dr. Klause reports surgery took longer than expected due to the
length of time since injury occurred but the bones came together well
and he anticipates he will heal quite satisfactorily and be able to
resume normal activities for his age with little discomfort.
A BIG THANK U to all who contributed to his much needed, life-saving
surgery and we continue to ask for additional donations in order to
cover the surgical costs as well as the follow up visits requiring
multiple radiograph views.
There will be an additional progress report tomorrow evening. Rest
Easy knowing he will now be on the road to recovery.
Update: October 10th.
Balto (his new name) has been released from Arcadia Small Animal Hospital
and is recovering from a successful surgery. He is restricted to constant
confinement so as not to risk movement of hte mending leg.
The delicate surgery was much more complicated than imagined, and
unfortunately, it was discovered that his femur was broken in four places.
His shattered leg was carefully placed back together by the competent
expertise of Dr. Kause, requireing a bar and 13 screws!.
The staff remarked that they were shocked when he came in upright and
walking on the three remaining good legs and just barely lifting his
bad leg. This is a testament to the incredible endurance and resillience
of this breed.
We thank Dr. Lee of Los Angeles Animal Servers, North Central Shelter,
and Dr. Klause, Chief of Surgery, Arcadia Animal Hospital for saving this
boy's leg, by truly caring and giving above and beyond. Also a grateful
thank you to those that help make this possible by donating funds to cover
his expenses.
We continue to ask for donations, as there will be follow-up visits and
additional X-rays in order to monitor the healing process.
